Inset (Field encryption)

Overview

INSET - field encryption

Securing data can be done on two different levels by:

  • Controlling access to the data
  • Encrypting the data

Controlling access does make sense as long as the data is in your own catchment's area. When the data leaves this area, you need to encrypt it.

Nowadays auditors demand the encryption of data, even if it is controlled by you. This prevents it from being 'understood' e.g. outside of applications.
Please keep in mind: Encoded data still can be manipulated, or deleted!

The data can be encrypted when it is not needed, and decrypted when it is needed. As long as the data does not contain access paths, such as keys, this is no big deal.

When data contains access paths (keys), and when these keys are encrypted as well, the keys are meaningless.

Inset takes care of key fields in data records and allows the en-/decryption of all data fields, but does not touch the key fields.
It is based on DES, and available as TAL/pTAL/epTAL API, and as a small program to perform a batch task.
The encryption engine in the standard product is realized in software. It can be replaced with a hardware module very easily.
